My Final Project was inspired by a task we were given by our tutor and course co-ordinator, Greg. The script/project was called 'CONVENIENCE'. I had a premeditated idea I thought would've been fun to expand on for my Final Project but, after I look at this script, and conceptualised it in a fun way, I soon realised that I had enough here to work with to make a high-quality Final Project. I spoke with Greg and he mentioned a fun twist to add to the narrative to give the film a bit more flavour and to further demonstrate my understanding for what we had learned over the past 10 weeks of studying this subject - so I decided to dial it all up to 100 and committed to it. In conclusion, it was one of the most enjoyable projects I've ever worked on and I'm incredibly happy with the final product.
Please enjoy!
Below are some of the not-so on the nose beats about the film in addition to some of my personal favourite parts.
Apart from the plot and story beats, a primary intention I had with the film itself (with the action figures and the voice-acting) which isn't particularly 'on the nose' was to portray the characteristics of two incredibly rich and hot-headed 'bozos' making a film for the sole purpose of making more money. Thus, I attempted to find subtle ways within the script, editing, and the cinematography to illustrate that this wasn't something made by Warner Bros. Producers. It was fun to try and balance good filmmaking to demonstrate my personal understanding of making and producing films in conjunction with a deliberate lazy style to give subtle hints at the fact that these filmmakers in the story have a very small notion of how they want to achieve their goal. This is illustrated best through the fact that the film is inspired by the cinematography of Wes Andersen, but to an extent. As you'll see some shots, which are supposed to be perfectly symmetrical or have perfect lighting are a slightly off, are deliberately placed like that to illuminate that the directors really are trying.
Furthermore, one of my personal favourite parts of the film is the interaction Phil has with 'Clerk 3'. This horror-esque tone makes you equally intrigued with the direction in addition to anxious for the protagonists fate - as we know he's desperate to go to the bathroom, does the fear take over him? Will he 'piss his pants'? And the subversion of expectations making Clerk 3 probably the most 'normal' of all the workers in this circus of an office.
